About This Item

In 1999, David Sampedro Gil founded Bodegas Bhilar and began tofarm his single hectare of land bio-dynamically; his neighbors and his family thought he was crazy. While the neighboring vineyards were neat and tidy, David’s vineyard came across as overgrown and smothered with weeds, seemingly abandoned. In reality however, he was reviving the overworked land by eliminating chemicals and re-introducing biodiversity through the use of cover crops and other biodynamic practices. The focus is on as little intervention as possible in both the vineyard and the winery, allowing David to develop his own philosophy of wine production to create unique wines that reflect a sense of place. This approach has been further solidified with the completion of a new minimal intervention winery in 2016, along with becoming the first winery in Rioja to obtain Demeter Certification - This approach intertwines man, earth, and vines with the cosmos. Having grown-up in the very vineyards he works today, it’s safe to say David is the best person to carry out his philosophy on this land. Today the estate covers 9.5 hectares, with David’s focus being in the vineyards, while his wife, Melanie Hickman, oversees all operational responsibilities of the winery.

While Rioja is best known for the production of Tempranillo, if you are not exploring the white wines of the region you are surely missing out. This wine is an excellent complement to the fall weather and your favorite autumn dishes. The nose is fresh and aromatic with a slight oxidative note, reminiscent of almond skins and citrus peel. On the palate the wine carries substantial weight with a fresh acidity, and notes of green apple and mixed stone fruits.
