About This Item

Founded in 1867 by Giuseppe Contratto, the winery is known as the oldest producer of sparkling wine in Italy. In fact, the 1919 "Metodo Classico" Contratto Extra Brut was the first vintage sparkling wine ever produced in the country. The winery has a long-distinguished history going back to the turn of the 20th century when its wines were destined for the cellars of the Vatican and royal houses throughout Europe. Located in Canelli, Piedmont, the winery boasts an impressive cathedral like cellar covering more than 5,000 square meters, which is designated to become a UNESCO Heritage Site.

In 1933 the winery was sold to Carlo Bocchino, local owner of Canelli’s grappa distillery, who with great effort and investment undertook the restoration of the impressive building, tasting rooms, and historic cellars. Then in June 2011, Bocchino handed over ownership to Giorgio Rivetti of La Spinetta, thus adding sparkling wines, vermouths and bitters to his already impressive portfolio. This transition has signified the beginning of a new era for Contratto. Rivetti and his team bring the resources and expertise to take the wines to the next level, and one can be certain the goals for quality are extremely ambitious. The effort to establish a production of 100% estate-grown fruit has already been made with investments in vineyards in Alta Langa to grow more Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With the same passion for wine making and dedication to quality which La Spinetta has had since 1977, Rivetti aims to make top sparkling wines at Contratto.

This wine has all the bells and whistles associated with vintage Champagne. The wine is made with classic Champagne varietals Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and produced in the Methode Champenoise style. Riddled by hand, the wine spends five years on the lees creating beautifully creamy undertones. With zero dosage, this wine is dry and powerful with abundant notes of peach, honey, graphite and white flowers.
