About This Item

The Mt. Beautiful vineyards lie in the heart of the up-and-coming subregion of North Canterbury, about an hour drive north of Christchurch. The Southern Alps act as a rain shadow to the north, and the vineyards’ namesake Mt. Beautiful (424 meters above sea level), sits to the east blocking the harsh coastal winds, with the Waiau and Hurunui Rivers flanking the vineyard to the north and south. Along with 23 different soil types, Mt. Beautiful is equipped with an array of microclimates perfect for producing world-class wines. Mt. Beautiful came to me on the second leg of my New Zealand harvest. I was working with winemaker Sam Weaver on his own label, Churton Vineyards, in Marlborough. We had just wrapped up what was an abundant last pick and the winery team needed an extra hand on the sorting table. Before I knew it, Mt. Beautiful became my home for the next four weeks. Ben Weaver, Sam’s son, has a science background and has completed WSET’s Diploma program. Both have experience producing wine in some of the world’s most renowned wine growing regions, Ben now acts as head winemaker. Riesling was the first varietal planted in the vineyard and the first to be farmed biodynamically. Located on the southern, higher elevated section of the vineyard, the site is split into two blocks, one spur pruned, the other single cane pruned which reduces vigor. Wines from both plots are later blended together.
