About This Item

Pax Mahle Wines focuses on the production of premium, vineyard designated, Syrah-based wines from the North Coast of California inspired by the great wines of the Northern Rhône Valley. When selecting vineyard sites, quality and pronounced terroir are key to achieving Pax’s hallmark style. The mission statement of the winery is “To produce reference point Syrah-based wines that are indicative of where they are grown.” The winery’s philosophy truly revolves around the idea that great wines are grown in the vineyard and not made in the cellar. Going along with this idea, Pax utilizes traditional winemaking techniques to preserve the uniqueness of each vineyard site, helping to encourage the personality of the wines to really shine. To accomplish this they utilize indigenous fermentations, stomp grapes by foot, practice minimal handling, implement an unobtrusive use of the finest French oak, and bottle without filtering or fining. This form of winemaking is extremely pure and unmanipulated, and the style is perfectly reflected in the wines. Recently Pax has evolved to include new and exciting varietals in addition to Syrah including Chenin Blanc, Gamay, and Carignan amongst others.

The 2017 North Coast Syrah is a new addition to the portfolio of Pax wines, formally bottled under the cuveé name The Hermit. The wine is a barrel select cuveé from all of their single vineyard sites along the North Coast. This wine allows them to ensure the utmost quality of the single vineyard bottlings while creating this unique blend of all the different terroirs, creating a compelling wine which over delivers on quality and can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring.
