About This Item

Is there a grape variety that produces more stylistically diverse wines than Sauvignon Blanc? Steely and herbaceous in Loire Valley; rich, stony and age-worthy in Bordeaux; exotically tropical, exuberant and vegetal in New Zealand; bell peppery in Chile; and all over the flavor spectrum in California where historically it has been treated with a bit too much oak for my taste. That trend has waned, thankfully, as some California winemakers are striving for simplicity, purity of fruit flavor and varietal distinction rather than overly-manipulated wines. Presqu’ile Winery in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Maria Valley, is one such winery that is embracing this trend and excelling at it. Using estate fruit from the Presqu’ile Vineyard, a diversely planted site located in this cool, windswept region, winemaker Dieter Cronje achieves a multilayered Sauvignon Blanc that hovers between Old World mineral-focuses styles and plush, fruit-driven California versions. How does this happen? First, the fruit in this region benefits from a long period of ripening which develops elevated natural acidity and complexity of flavor. Secondly, the winemaker chooses to utilize diverse clonal selection, native yeast fermentation, and sur lie maturation in neutral oak and stainless steel. This is a distinctive, edgy Sauvignon Blanc.
