About This Item

Marjorie and Ste´phane Gallet arrived in the Roussillon in the early 2000s. They had met at agronomy school years earlier, but winemaking was not their career goal. Frequent escapes for R&R to the Roussillon piqued their interest in wine, and in the early 2000s, they moved to the area and began their careers as vignerons with Marjorie studying for several years under the master of Roussillon wine, Ge´rard Gauby. After 8 years, the Gallets struck out on their own. At their sun-drenched winery, Roc des Anges (Angel’s Rock), they produce diverse styles of white, red and fortified wines from grapes grown in the sparse, nutrient-free granite, schist and gravelly soils of the region. Working mostly with Grenache, Grenache Blanc and Carignan, the couple also produce a white wine called Imalaya, made from the rare grape variety Carignan Gris, of which only 49 acres remain in all of France. A sunny climate coupled with poor soils results in low vine yields and usually in highly concentrated wines. But as Marjorie is quoted as saying, “Concentration is the enemy.” Her goal is to produce wines of balance with moderate alcohol levels with pure expressions of terroir. Imalaya does just that.
