About This Item

Domaine Vacheron is truly a star of the Loire. The family Domaine is currently led by Jean-Dominique Vacheron and his cousin Jean-Laurent. Originally established in 1968, the estate started with only five hectares. Today, they boast 48 hectares of vineyards all farmed organically and biodynamically in flint soil laden with oceanic fossils. All harvesting is done by hand, a practice that is increasingly rare in the region. In the winery, the cousins bring Burgundian winemaking to Sancerre with each parcel being vinified separately and with blends varying from year to year. They use indigenous yeast for fermentation, age in used French Oak for 12 months, and bottle the wine without any fining or filtering.

“Les Romains” is a reference to the Romans that first planted this vineyard in Sancerre. It’s a single vineyard that is fully south facing. The flint and fossils express themselves beautifully in the wine with striking minerality and hints of smoke. It has a rich and opulent texture balanced by crisp acidity and ripe yellow fruit with a long and juicy finish.  This wine is one of purity and definition and has put Domaine Vacheron on the map as an elite producer in Sancerre.  We recommend saving this one for September, when it’s still hot but the smell of fall is in the air.
