About This Item

Charles Joguet is a name that has become synonymous with the Chinon region and has come to represent some of the highest quality wines coming from the Loire region in central France. These wines have been celebrated as far back as the 16th century.  However, it was Charles Joguet’s doings that are responsible for the distinction and high regard the region enjoys today. Originally a sculptor and painter, he took over his family’s Domaine in 1957. The Joguets owned prime vineyard land in between the Loire and Vienne Rivers, plots that would be considered in other regions premier cru and grand cru. Charles quickly began to question the common practice of selling off his grapes to négociants. He understood that selling the grapes or vinifying these individualized plots together would have been madness and that separate terroirs necessitate separate vinifications. Charles Joguet was one of the first vigneron in Chinon to start bottling his own production and also the first to introduce the concept of vinifying and bottling younger and older vines apart. Joguet's accountant, Jaques Genet, invested in the business in 1985. Today, the Domaine is run by Genet's daughter Anne-Charlotte, whilst the viticulture and winemaking is conducted by the young and talented Kevin Fontaine.

 

This wine is sourced from vines averaging 25 years of age and situated on the left bank of the Vienne River, on the edge of Chinon AOC with clay and limestone soil that is ideal for growing Chenin Blanc. It is barrel fermented in 33% new 225-liter barrels and assembled in stainless steel tanks. The wine has a beautiful marriage between aroma and structure with an enticing bouquet of elderflower and lilac and substantial but elegant weight on the palate.
