About This Item

The history of the Gouffier estate goes back 200 years to rumors of Napoleon Bonaparte using the stone-domed cellar as a bunker.  Since then, the name has changed several times due to it being handed down through maternal line.  Today, it is in the hands of Frédéric Gueugneau and Benoit Pagot.  Frédéric’s connection to the Gouffier estate began in his childhood.  Growing up near the estate in Fontaines between Rully and Mercurey, he would often work harvest with Jerome Gouffier.  Years later, Jerome’s failing health called Frédéric back to assist with the estate’s day-to-day operations. Upon Jerome’s passing, the Gouffier family asked Frédéric to assume control in 2011.  He brought back with him 8 years of experience at La Chablisienne and a new chapter for the winery.  He converted the estate’s 5.5 hectares throughout the Côte Chalonnaise to organic farming practices and contracted Doreau Tonneliers of Cognac to be their only cooper.  Their relationship has created a perfect match between barrel and wine with nearly 20% of the wood coming from just beyond the walls of the property.

Domaine Gouffier produces wines from 8 appellations including Montagny, Givry, Rully, and Bouzeron.  Clos L’Eveque is their Premier Cru vineyard in Mercurey, a region known for a slightly more robust style of Burgundy. Meaning “The Bishop,” Clos L’Eveque is firm with notes of ripe berries that when aged will give way to more earthy notes.
