About This Item

Along the river Sil in Ribeira Sacra you will find a plot of land with steep south-facing terraces that has been growing vines since the time of the Romans.  The warm sun ripens the grapes all day while the river below keeps the area cool and everything in balance. Ramón Losada and his family are working the vineyards just as their family did before them. This stunning vineyard is Viña Caneiro, one of three sites belonging to D. Ventura.  Each vineyard has its own unique micro-climate and is bottled as its own cuvée, but they all receive the same natural approach in the vineyards and in the winery.  Organic farming, hand harvesting, indigenous yeast, no fining or filtering, and stainless steel ageing allow each wine to develop into a unique expression of the same Mencía grape.  Do Burato is the lightest and most delicate of the three and drinks almost like a Cru Beaujolais.  Pena Do Lobo is a step bigger with added notes of minerality.  Viña Caneiro is the heaviest and D. Ventura’s top cuvée.  It’s deep and complex with a hearty balance of fruit, earth, and minerality from the vineyard’s slate soils.

While Mencía isn’t the only red grape that you will find in this area of Galicia, it is definitely the most common.  It is also gaining more and more international traction and establishing itself with Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Priorat as one of the great wines of Spain.
