About This Item

Fred Scherrer’s love of wine started as a teenager of the 70s when his parents allowed him to make wine from family vineyards at home under their supervision. After receiving a degree from UC Davis, his wine journey became a patch-work of learning and growth as he built a web of friends and relationships to expand his skills. A job at Duxoup Wine Works was followed by Greenwood Ridge who let him produce his first wine: Scherrer Zinfandel. Lessons in business planning were learned at Dehlinger Winery. Support from his parents followed as he returned to his roots and once again used grapes from his parents' vineyards in Alexander Valley to make wine, this time on a much larger scale. By the late 90s, Fred had found his stride. He moved from the corner of an apple packing shed to leasing a whole building for his winery and expanded from producing three varietals to a dozen different wines. His total production is still relatively small at only 4,000 to 5,000 cases, most of which is Pinot Noir.

Fred’s venture into Grenache came as the result of wanting to replant part of their land that was no longer under vine. His love of Grenache based wines out of Europe and Australia and the grape's tendency to do well in similar conditions made for an easy choice. Kick Ranch Vineyard is a slightly cooler climate than is typical for Grenache. The result is a wine that is delicate on the nose, but richer in the mouth. Fred only made 85 cases of this gem and describes it as having “a sense of transparency as though riding in a double-deck fully windowed railcar thru the countryside. Satisfying without being too challenging.”
