About This Item

Forge Cellars is the collaboration of three friends: winemaker  Louis Barruol from Chateau de St. Cosme in Gigondas, winemaker Justin Boyette, and vineyard manager Rick Rainey. Their vineyards are on the east side of Seneca Lake in upstate New York, and Riesling and Pinot Noir are the exclusive grapes of choice. Their goal is to grow grapes and handcraft wines of interest and value that perfectly balance minerality, aromatics, and fruit to reflect the exceptional Finger Lakes terroir. All of their grapes are harvested by hand. Each parcel is fermented separately with spontaneous fermentation and using very low levels of sulphur. Their Rieslings are always fermented bone dry, and the Pinots are never fined or filtered. Their natural fermentation process lasts longer than most with bottling beginning the following summer instead of spring. Every step of the way they make choices that allow the wines to best express the region's soil, cool climate, and hillside lake terroir.

Sunrise Hill is one of Forge Cellars’ nine single-vineyard Rieslings.  The vineyard lies on the western side of Cayuga Lake near Interlaken and enjoys the warm sunrise every morning.  The clay soils bring out a strong minerality in the grapes while the use of neutral barrels helps to round out the racing acidity and add body.  Put this one next to your Sancerre in the “Complex Summer Sippers” category and enjoy one of the best expressions of Riesling outside of Germany.
