About This Item

George R. Davis purchased the Porter Creek Estate in 1978 when Chardonnay was the grape of choice in the Russian River Valley.  Davis was a pioneer of the time, being one of the first to believe that Pinot Noir was right for the region and pushing for AVA status that was finally achieved in 1983.  Today, his son, Alex, is at the helm and oversees all of the operations as Vineyard Manager, Winemaker, Business Manager, and overall reluctant “boss.”  While his father was self taught, Alex learned from the best.  After attending Fresno State University, he also completed a one-year program at the Université de Bourgogne studying Viticulture and Enology.  He got his hands dirty working harvests with  Christophe Roumier, arguably the greatest winemaker in Burgundy, with Michelot-Mestre in Meursault, at Domaine E. Guigal in the Rhône Valley, and a fourth harvest in South Africa.

When Alex returned to Porter Creek in 1997, he brought with him the connection to the vineyards and the understanding of nuances from one plot to the next that he had learned abroad.  He converted the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming and the winemaking to the use of only native yeasts.  His father, George, is still around but also advocates for small farmers as the Vice President of the California Farmers Union.

The Hayley Marie Vineyard Viognier is Porter Creek’s first estate-bottled single-vineyard Viognier.  Alex’s French experience really shines through as the wine has a beautiful balance of the weight you expect from Viognier but with Old World finesse.
