About This Item

When you start venturing into Argentinian wines, you won’t get far without running into the Catena family. Nicola Catena sailed from Italy to Argentina in 1898 and planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902. Since then, the Catena family has been a constant pioneer of Argentinian winemaking. Today, the future is in the hands of Nicola’s grandson, Nicola´s Catena Zapata, and his daughter, Laura Catena.

Laura is a woman of many talents and splits her time between Mendoza as a vintner and San Francisco as an Emergency Medicine physician. She started Luca, named for her first born son, in 1999 out of a desire to refocus Argentinian winemaking on small family-owned vineyards, artisan quality, and expressing individual terroirs. The last piece of the puzzle was Vineyard Director Luis Reginato, a third-generation winemaker and viticulturist who has now been working with Laura for 20 years.

The G-Lot, named for the Gualtallary subregion, was planted in 1992 to both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and is the first extreme high-altitude Chardonnay planted in Mendoza. Laura is literally pushing Argentinian winemaking to new heights with intense sunlight and cool temperatures. These challenging conditions mean naturally low yields and wines with intense flavors, delicate minerality, and pure elegance.
