About This Item

Originally a chef, Franc¸ois Villard established his winemaking estate in 1989 when he planted his first vines in Condrieu. After years of borrowing cellar space from Yves Cuilleron, he decided to build his own winery in 1996 in St. Michel Sur Rho^ne. Today, the estate has more than 40 hectares under vine, all farmed organically. He supplements the grapes from his holdings with purchased fruit and produces wines throughout the Northern Rho^ne in Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Saint-Peray, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Co^te-Ro^tie.

Condrieu is known for its Viognier and the grapes for Les Contours de Deponcins come from right outside the region. It is beautifully floral like all Viogniers are with hearty body and delicate acidity. Franc¸ois’s style is one of bold elegance. He harvests his fruit plot by plot and typically does so later than his neighbors to optimize ripeness. But while his goal is intensity of flavor, it is always with balance. The Alsatian bottle shape is rarely seen in the Rho^ne Valley but is indicative of this wine’s floral and delicate style.
